Displaying pictures on web pages can make a web site more appealing, but it can also considerably slow down the time it takes to load and display a page fully.

The speed at which pictures are loaded and displayed will depend on the size of the picture file - the larger the file the longer it will take.

Other factors such as the speed of the Internet connection and the amount of traffic currently on the Internet also affect how quickly pictures are displayed.

Pictures can include other graphics, and can also include text that has been produced as a picture.

The Multimedia settings allow you to show or hide pictures, and also play (or not play) animations and videos.

If the Show pictures, Play animations and Play videos settings are not chosen, the web page will be displayed much more quickly, but remember that some important information normally displayed in a picture, animation or video could be missing.

When you change the Multimedia settings, the new settings apply to the next page you access, but you can click the Refresh button to update the current page with the new settings.

By default, Microsoft Internet Explorer will show pictures and play animations and videos.
